Girls Night - The Musical Providence Theatre reviews
Great show!
I was impressed by The London Souls from NYC, the opening act, and purchased their CD. The trio has a classic rock sound, with terrific vocal harmonies, making it a great rock/soul power. The crowd was very lively and appreciative, and both Derek and Susan, along with keyboardist Kofi Burbridge, were really on fire that night. Girls Night - The Musical was awesome, playing mostly material from their latest record 'Made up Mind'. The energy the horn section brought to the stage was fantastic. The uncomfortable seats with zero leg or elbow room were the only complaints, as it was very difficult to squeeze by. Beer was a reasonable $7, but $4 for a bottle of filtered Dasani water seemed too much. The Warner Theatre is a beautiful historic theater with great acoustics, and there's really not a bad seat in the house. Even though the setlist consisted mostly of material from TTB's 2 albums, they did surprise with a couple of tunes from the Derek Trucks Band catalog featuring Mike Mattison on lead vocals. I love his voice and would like to see him and Susan duet more like they did at the Crossroads Festival in 2026. While the tradition of having 2 drummers on stage is known with bands like the Allman Bros. and the Grateful Dead, I've seen J.J. Johnson as the only drummer tear it up with John Mayer, Doyle Bramhall II, or Ian Moore, and I'd rather see him back there on his own. I don't know who the bass player was on this tour, but I truly miss Oteil Burbridge and his amazing solos. You can't replace that guy. Some highlights were the opener "Made Up Mind," "Midnight in Harlem," "Bound for Glory," "Part of Me," and a cover of Joe Cocker's "Space Captain."
